Ayurveda :
Cycles of the Day

Classes available at SFCC in Gainesville

Kapha I Cycle
6:00 am - 10:00 am

All movement slows down.
Sleeping past 7:00 am makes it harder to
get up and makes you feel groggy.
Ayurveda calls sleep between 7:00 am - 9:00 am
"diminishing sleep" because it weakens or exhausts you.
Sleep between 9:00 am - 11:00 am is called "dangerous sleep"
because of the bad effects it has on the body.
Waking during this time makes you feel drugged.
During this time, exercise is beneficial as it
gets things moving and removes toxins that
accumulate during the night.

Pitta I Cycle
10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Metabolism increases and
is at its highest at 12:00 noon.
This is the best time to eat your largest
meal of the day and take your vitamins.
This is also the best time to plan and organize,
as well as do the bulk of your work.

Vata I Cycle
2:00 pm - 6:00 pm

This is the time of increased movement and activity.
The evening meal should be lighter than the lunch meal.
Mental activity is stimulated, lively and communication is easier.
Socializing is important at this time.
Meditation at sunset is a good conclusion
to the day's activities.

Kapha II Cycle
6:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Activity slows down, getting you ready for your evening sleep.
If you don't go to bed by 11:00 pm,
it may be more difficult for you to get to sleep.
During this time it is useful to plan for the next day,
write in your journal,
read or take a warm bath
with your favorite essential oils.

Pitta II Cycle
10:00 pm - 2:00 am

This is the time of active, colorful dreams and deep sleep.
If you are still awake, take care to resist the urge to eat,
or you may regret it the next day.
This is dreaming time.
Try to chronicle your dreams,
as they can be directed with practice.
Active dreaming is beneficial to
a balanced and blissful mental state.

Vata II Cycle
2:00 am - 6:00 am

This time corresponds to the ascending
Universal Spirits used by meditators to achieve high spiritual states.
Waking up between 5:00 am - 6:00 am gives you the opportunity
to do spiritual exercises that will stay with you all day.
The sunrise is encouragement and the acknowledgment of the
source of light and energy that we all depend upon.
Sleeping past 7:00 am puts you back in the
lethargic Kapha time.
