Scents Of Peace

A Scent-ual Valentine

If you think you're not lead by your nose - think again.

The sense of smell is so vital to our existence that olfactory nerve cells are replaced every 28 days. Odors stimulate the limbic portion of the human brain, the hub of our response system. Here the release of neurotransmitters, such as endorphins, create a sense of well-being, euphoria and also stimulate sexual response. But, pheromones (fragrant hormone-like substances that influence physical attraction) are undetected by the conscience mind. Plant source extracts, known as essential oils, often contain pheromones.

It is important to use pure essential oils to benefit from their therapeutic properties. Synthetic aromas can only stimulate the brain from a previously learned experience. Therefore, artificial scents cannot offer the same beneficial effect as plant sources and can often trigger an allergic reaction.

Ylang-ylang, a well-known aphrodisiac, helps replace feelings of stress and tension with sensuality and euphoria. It is rejuvenating to the body and mind. However, relaxation is key to romance and the essential oil of lavender may be all that you need for a tender moment. Other essential oils that are sensual in nature are: jasmine, rose, sandalwood, neroli, geranium, patchouli, palma rosa, vetiver, and cardamom.

Many commercially prepared massage products are made with mineral oil (the main ingredient in baby oil), which inhibit the body's absorption of vitamin A and E. Sesame seed oil, with its small molecular structure, easily penetrates the skin for a nourishing and low friction massage. An acceptable alternative can be found at any grocer - a good quality, liquid vegetable oil.

Cleopatra Bath

Honey is a wonderful humectant and milk is a luxurious and natural emulsifier - both are very beneficial to the skin. Try one of the recipes below, or add 10-15 drops of your favorite essential oil, to ½ cup of milk and 2 tablespoons of honey. Stir into a steamy bath for two!

Harem Girl

10 drops sandalwood
5 drops cardamom
5 drops ylang-ylang
*an intriguing floral spice for bath or massage

Simple Pleasures

6 drops grapefruit
4 drops ylang-ylang
2 drops sandalwood
*smells like a creamsicle when added to milk and honey

Mark Antony Massage

Using one of the recipes, or your favorite combination of essential oils, carefully measure and add to approximately 4 ounces of your carrier (i.e. sesame oil), and blend. Store in a cool, dark place and use within 6-8 months. Discard if oil becomes rancid.

Linen Spray

For the ultimate romantic experience, mix your favorite essential oils and add 25-30 drops to 4 ounces of tap water, rose water or witch hazel and store in a small, unused spray bottle that can be purchased at a dollar store. To freshen your bed sheets and pillows, shake before each use to blend the oils and spritz lightly. Some essential oils have the added benefit of being antiseptic, antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal !

A suggested combination:

25 drops each ylang-ylang, lavender and lime
10 drops palma rosa
5 drops cardamom

Or you could use just the ylang-ylang, lavender and lime in equal proportions. Additionally, this recipe can be used to spray onto the body after a shower for a light personal fragrance.
